There was a real buzz around Thorntons Recycling HQ last week as two of Ireland’s top cycling prospects, Matthew Walls and Conn McDunphy, called in for a visit. The lads, who are signing shortly with a new team, an American-based professional outfit, dropped by to talk through plans for the 2026 season and grab a few photos with Paul Thornton.
We’ve been proud supporters of Matthew Walls throughout 2025 - a year in which he truly announced himself on the international scene. Matthew claimed standout victories at The Junior Tour of Ireland and The Portugal Junior Tour, achievements that mark him as one of the most exciting young riders to emerge from Ireland in recent years.
As Matthew steps out of the junior ranks and onto the elite stage, he’ll continue his development under the guidance of teammate and mentor Conn McDunphy, through Conn’s renowned coaching programme, Pedal Graft Coaching. Conn himself is a well-established force in the Irish peloton, with years of top-level results, including a close, hard-fought second place at the Rás Tailteann in 2024.
The partnership between the two riders is already yielding strong momentum, and with Team APS providing a global platform, we’re excited to follow their progress as they race across Europe and the US in 2026.

Cycling has long been a part of our CSR and community engagement at Thorntons Recycling. Supporting riders like Matthew and Conn is a natural extension of our commitment to nurturing Irish talent and backing the grassroots clubs that keep the sport thriving.

Supporting Irish athletes as they chase big ambitions is something we’re incredibly proud to do - and we’re excited to cheer them on as they represent Ireland on the international stage.
Here’s to a safe, successful, and fast 2026 season for the lads!
