The Rediscovery Centre 30/03/2020

The Rediscovery Centre in the heart of Ballymun, Dublin 6, is a fully sustainable and environmentally friendly building opening its doors to every walk of life.

The centre is committed to teaching the public new sustainable skills for at home and at work. Some of the workshops they host are on furniture and fashion upcycling. They are also committed to educating the next generation to help them avoid the mistakes of the past.

They have four workshops where their team of 33 people spends their day creating and mending materials for resale in their ECO Store. This includes furniture, fashion, bikes and paint workshops. These workshops are run by experts in their field and they invite corporate companies and the general public to attend their masterclasses.

The fashion workshop appeals to the public looking to make use of their recent wardrobe and save money in the long term. The masterclasses in fashion are held on sewing for beginners, mending for knitwear amongst other classes. In the ECO Store, the centre has some exciting outfits created using everyday outfits. This includes a rain jacket made from a local IKEA bag.

The bike workshop fixes bikes that have been discarded because they no longer work. They replace brakes, chains, and tyres. This workshop gives an old bike a new lease on life and they are then sold onto a new home for a young child to enjoy or for an eco-friendly worker to cycle to work. The team in the bike workshop also works with corporate companies offering bike maintenance for their staff.

Furniture destined for landfill but can be salvaged is brought to the Rediscovery Centre for some TLC. The team uses traditional and environmentally friendly products in their work, keeping up with the theme of the entire building. In their ECO Store they have a table and cabinet on show from the Titanic era. These pieces of furniture were restored to their former glory by the hard-working team.

Thorntons Recycling donates paint to the rediscovery centre from our facility in Ballyogan, Co Dublin. From January 2019 to October 2019, the centre received over fourteen and a half tonnes and they have resold half of this already in January 2020. This paint is remixed to make specific colours. These colours are sold in the ECO Store to the general public.
