Thorntons Recycling Tanker’s engineers are trained to undertake all interceptor related tasks to the highest standards.  This includes both working at height and in confined spaces.

Why choose us?

Interceptors are designed to collect rain water, oil and other waste products which accumulate in car parks, lorry depots, schools, airports and parks, to name just a few examples.  The system itself is designed to permit only water to escape, trapping all other pollutants for example; oils, fuels and other solid waste within the filtering system.

The accumulation of this waste can cause blockages and if the interceptor were to overflow, all this waste would be dispersed back out across the area it was supposed to protect.  The build-up of oil, debris and other miscellaneous contaminants within an interceptor, alongside the prominent risk of hydrocarbons contaminating the sewerage system or watercourse dramatically increases the risk of forecourt or driveway flooding.

Where are Interceptors needed

Surface water may be contaminated by oil at a number of different sites. These sites need to have measures in place to prevent this oil from polluting the environment. These sites include:

  • Car parks typically larger than 800m2 in area or for 50 or more car parking spaces
  • Cmaller car parks discharging to a sensitive environment
  • Areas where goods vehicles are parked or manoeuvred
  • Vehicle maintenance areas
  • Roads
  • Industrial sites where oil is stored or used
  • Refuelling facilities
  • Any other site with a risk of oil contamination.

Overflowing Interceptors

The problems an overflowing interceptor can cause can be significant.  If an interceptor overflows, it could result in a car park covered in oil, which is potentially very dangerous for both customers and staff.  Long term problems for a business could include closing down car parks to have the situation dealt with, losing custom and inevitably, money.  Obviously, in addition to this, there is, of course, the inevitable environmental impact.

Preventing overflow

To prevent overflow and contamination of drainage systems, the interceptor needs to be maintained and serviced on a regular basis.  We recommend a servicing and emptying of interceptors on a 6 monthly basis for standard installations, which is the legal requirement.
